CLINICAL SUPERVISION

Clinical supervision makes a vitally important contribution to the therapist or counsellor and is often seen as a key component of any successful counselling and psychotherapy practice.

Generally speaking, clinical supervision is an in-depth, regular time for professionally facilitated reflection on the supervisee’s practice with their clients.  As such, it is primarily a confidential working alliance between two professionals where supervisees offer an account of the work in order to reflect on it, receive feedback and guidance, if appropriate.

The objective of this alliance is to enable the supervisee to make gains in such areas as:

  • Professional and Ethical Competency
  • Confidence
  • Creativity

Effective supervision provides a ‘safe place’ for therapists and counsellors to come in order to ensure a continuing assessment of skills and areas of clinical ‘strengths and weaknesses’.  Importantly, supervision also serves to provide the practitioner with general support and encouragement in their work.  The process is often seen as a source of ‘professional refueling’ in a field that’s often very taxing on the therapist or counsellor on many levels.

Unlike the function of academic teaching, clinical supervision is often known as ‘a facilitated learning medium’ for the supervisee.  Experiential learning is at the heart of the supervision process; whereby learning is transformational and not necessarily transmissional.

As a senior psychotherapist, Tony Africano has offered supervision to many professionals across a wide range of mental health and allied fields.  He is dedicated to his own continuing training in the practice of supervision in order to offer relevant theory, up-to-date knowledge and skill development to his supervisee-clients.
